Instructor: John (JB) Bernfield, MS, ATC, CSCS

WHO CAN BENEFIT:   This course will be helpful to coaches of all levels and rowers who want to gain a better understanding of the mechanics of rowing and make their training more productive.

ABOUT JOHN BERNFIELD:  With a Master’s of Science degree specializing in biomechanics and exercise physiology, as well as over 45 years of successful rowing, John Bernfield (JB) is uniquely qualified to understand the complexities of  making a rowing boat fast.  In addition, JB’s experience as a rowing coach and sports performance coach help him understand the best training plans for maximizing training efficiency  and ultimately boat velocity.  Finally, as a professional athletic trainer for 37 years JB understands the causes and prevention of athletic injuries.

Friday, March 23, 7:00 pm to  9:00 pm., Genesee Waterways Center

THE BIOMECHANICS OF BOAT MOVEMENT -
Implications for training - We will reserve plenty of time for questions. Come dressed to participate.

Discuss boat speed oscillations in a stroke cycle through the perspective of Newton’s laws of motion, and what causes these oscillations.
  • Explore the knowledge of anatomy and sport performance training to develop a rational of training to enhance boat average velocity.
  • Introduce core training, movement patterns and the development of power throughout these movements that lead to increase ability to create force on the oar and reduce the chance of injury.
  • Practice executing and observing proper movement mechanics and core training activities.

Saturday, March 24, 8-10am, Genesee Waterways Center

TEACHING THE BEGINNING ROWER
Motor learning progressions that make sense.

  • Discuss what motor learning research tells us and how that applies to teaching beginning rowing
  • Describe a progression of learning rowing movements that enhance chances of early successful movement and limits unwanted movement artifacts that cause injury and reduce force production
  • Practice the introduction and application of these principles

Saturday, March 24, 10:30-12pm., Pittsford Indoor Rowing Center

INDOOR ROWING

  • Observe a workout
  • Try the teaching progression
  • Get a workout in on the rowing ergometer

Saturday, March 24, 1-4pm, Genesee Waterways Center

THE APPLICATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF PHYSIOLOGY TO TRAINING OF ROWERS
Train smarter not harder.

  • Introduce of the concept of the physiological systems important in enhancing work output
  • Discuss a model of periodization for training these systems throughout the year
  • Explore options of rowing and dry land workouts that optimize each of the systems contributing to rowing speed
