Rowing News

Cross Currents Team Receives Invitation to the Head of the Charles
A recent article on GWC's Cross Currents Minority Rowing Team in the Brown Alumni magazine caught the attention of HOCR Race Director Alan Day.  Lydia Boddie-Rice, general manager for Cross Currents and a Brown Alum, was excited to hear the news that Day has extended an invitation to the team to participate in the HOCR's Charity Program in 2009 and would assist with fundraising for the team's participation.  The Charity Program raises funds for HOCR charities that support and promote diversity in the rowing community, opportunities for individuals with disabilities, and creating affordable access to the sport of rowing for youth and adults.

Cross Currents members are already training in the indoor tanks and looking forward to getting out on the water later this spring.  New rowers are continually joining the group and the team is recruiting youth to try the sport--and hopefully get hooked!  We welcome John Hylton & Derrick Coley from the Rochester City Library who have joined us in the Indoor Rowing program and are very enthusiastic about the sport and getting the youth from their program involved in rowing.  A "Try-It" session will be scheduled for late spring in the tanks for those interested.

Also keep an eye out for fundraisers this year for the Cross Currents team to support their trip to the Charles!

Indoor Rowing
GWC's Indoor Rowing programs are going strong, with Recreational classes offered on Tuesday & Wednesday evenings.  The next session will begin the first week of March on Monday & Wednesday evenings from 5:45-7:15pm.

"Drop-in" rowers are welcome on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings.  See schedule below for dates & times through the end of February.

The Competitive Rowing Program led by John Bernfield meets three times per week; one night is a land workout that focuses on improving functional movement through exercises and using equipment such as kettle bells, slide boards, and medicine balls; two nights are spent in the tanks, incorporating calisthenics & tank rowing practice, concentrating on developing technique and a uniform rowing stroke amongst the rowers.  Indiviuals participating in the program are increasing their strength, flexibility, and endurance that not only improves their rowing performance, but also improves their overall quality of life.

The next full session for the Competitive Rowing Program begins the first week of March; drop-in rowers are welcome on Saturday mornings--see schedule below!

Contest: A Rower's Perspective
Our goal is to enhance our club with an electronic publication that spotlights our rowers and their experiences at the GWC. We are asking for emailed submission to hear your story!  The selections are to be more than a paragraph but less than a typed page.  The chosen submission will not only be featured as a thank you but we will also offer a FREE Sculling Lesson on the water this summer. Let us hear your perspective!   Email info@geneseewaterways.org with "my story" in the subject line.

Lock 32 Whitewater Park To Have Building for 2009 Season
At long last, the permitting process has been completed for the building for Lock 32 Whitewater Park!  Once the snow melts and the ground has thawed, the groundwork will be started in preparation for the delivery of the 24' x 36' building.  The structure will provide more than just shelter for kayakers and storage for boats; it will give us classroom space, changing areas for privacy, and a place to relax after a long day--or evening--of paddling to hang out with friends.  Since the park opened it has been operating with the use of two trailers, one of which will be kept for secure storage.

GWC Member and Lock 32 Site Host Brian Page has dedicated his Eagle Scout project to helping Lock 32 WW Park grow.  He has received donations of building materials and will create storage lockers & a system for storing the kayaks.  Eagle projects are time consuming and hard work, and we appreciate that Page has chosen his project to benefit Lock 32's WW Park, and we look forward to the improvements that his project will bring to the facility!

Local Teen Travels to China with Academic Paddling School
On January 15, Danny Doran flew out of the Rochester airport on the first leg of a long journey to China with the World Class Kayak Academy.
This is the second semester that Doran has paddled internationally with the travelling 'kayak high school', although this year the trip takes him to a much colder climate (last spring he was in South America)!  This kind of opportunity has been opened up for Doran as he was introduced to whitewater kayaking when he was 11 years old, paddling at the Lock 32 Whitewater Park in his hometown of Pittsford.  It was a sport that he took to naturally and soon every free moment was spent out at the Lock and then on the rivers.  We look forward to his updates and stories as he travels around China , paddling rivers and learning about a culture that many have not had the opportunity to explore!  Doran will be back on the US West Coast in March, participating in competitions in California with his fellow students.  Doran is a sophomore at Pittsford-Mendon.
