GWC Joins the Facebook Community!
Many thanks to rowing instructor Christina Sadowski for bringing GWC into the 21st century and creating a Facebook group for GWC!

The group was created for the purpose of sharing information, knowledge, and creating a sense of community among the paddlers & rowers at GWC!   The group is open to GWC members only, and you must have a Facebook account in order to join.

Looking for a buddy to paddle or row with on a summer evening? Check GWC's Facebook page to see who else is around!

The Insider Magazine to Feature GWC's Indoor Rowing Programs
Insider's
Emily Shearing features indoor rowing in her column, "What Would Emily Do?"

On February 4, reporter Emily Shearing joined the GWC recreational rowing group at their practice to see what rowing in the tanks is all about!  Emily's column features recreational activities that takes place here in Rochester, and last week our instructors and rowers shared their passion for rowing with her.  Coaches Paul and Christina taught Emily the basic rowing stroke and introduced rowing terminology so she would have a feel for the sport.  At the end of the class, Emily was enthusiastic about rowing and we might just find her in the next Learn To Row session...

Emily's article will be featured in the Insider at the end of February/early March!

Thank You!
A big THANK YOU to Alison Patrick for connecting David Foster with GWC's Cross Currents!    Foster recently donated an erg to Cross Currents that is currently being used at the Rochester City Library's Safe To Be Smart program for youth.  Having access to the erg will be a great introduction to rowing for the teens at the center, in addition to providing a means of practicing and getting exercise after school.  We look forward to these youth joining our rowing programs this winter and into the summer!

Coach's Corner
From Coach Christina:
You may find that you have reached a plateau in your Winter Training and feel that it has become routine.  The best suggestion I can offer is to center back on rowing technique and strength training. Two technical areas, heels down and 'body prep', are necessary for a powerful, controlled stroke. Perfecting these two elements off the water will make for a smooth transition once back in the boat.

Rowing Quote of the week:
"Ergometer is Greek for 'work meter' " -- *Barry Strauss* from *Rowing Against the Current*

"It's A Small World After All!"
If the name Jennifer Goldsack sounds familiar, you may recall she was the 2008 recipient of GWC's Olympic Fund, which assisted with her training expenses in her quest for Gold in Beijing.   Goldsack and her partner, Renee Hyckel, narrowly missed the qualifiers for the medal round in the lightweight double sculling event in China last summer.

On a more positive note however, Jen Goldsack was recently married in New York City to Olympic Gold Medalist Daniel Beery (Men's 8+, 1984).  Follow the link for their story, featured recently in the New York Times.

How is it a small world?  GWC rowing instructor Christina Sadowski rowed for the Division I Crew team at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, which is also Renee Hyckel's alma mater, and Jen Goldsack was named Assistant Women's Coach at St. Joseph's University this past fall.

Update From Lock 32 Instructor Danny Doran in China
Doran just completed one of the last descents on the Great Bend section of the Yangtze River with World Class Kayak Academy in China. The Great Bend of the Yangtze River makes a hairpin turn through a remarkable 10,000-foot-deep gorge (that's deeper than the Grand Canyon!).  The Yangtze River is the third longest river in the world, and is the lifeblood of China, known in Chinese as the “mother river” or simply the “long river”.  China’s rivers are at a crossroads. They are the lifeblood of the world’s most rapidly growing economy, but their ecological health and their ability to sustain the communities that depend on them has never been more at risk [China's Rivers Projects].

The Great Bend of the Yangtze is on its last leg. Many dams will soon turn its stunning canyons into a series of giant reservoirs. With the rising water level, many farmers' homes and land will be submerged, forcing people to relocate their homes and the lifestyle they have known for hundreds of years.  To paddle this very remote area is an experience of a lifetime, however whether the 16-year old realizes the historical significance of his paddling exploits is up for debate!

Accompanying the young paddlers on their last descents is a crew from National Geographic, recording their story on the river and that of the Chinese people who call this area their home.
Check out the video update Danny edited at WCKA's blogspot.

A slideshow of pictures of this area of China can also be found at Outside Magazine.
