Lock 32 Whitewater Park Season Opening Friday, May 1st
5pm - dusk
Join us on Opening Day for free paddling and an après-paddle BBQ!  Prior experienced required to paddle in the whitewater course.  Flatwater/recreational paddling also offered on the calm waters of the Erie Canal from our flatwater access area.  Come on out to see all the changes so far this season!
The Building Has Arrived at Lock 32 Whitewater Park!

On Monday, March 23rd, the long-awaited building arrived at Lock 32 Whitewater Park!  We are very excited to have an area that will provide classroom and office space, a private area for changing, and shelter this season.  Look for the upcoming story about the Lock 32 Whitewater Park and its new building in the Our Town section of the D&C in early April!

We are moving forward with improvements at Lock 32 Whitewater Park, and would benefit from donations to help us get ready for another great season!  We have a wish list of items below, with direct links to products that can be purchased locally.  Thank you for considering making a donation to GWC's Lock 32 Whitewater Park!  GWC is a not-for-profit organization and your contribution is tax-deductible.

Donation/Wish List Items:
Picnic Tables (4) &
Adirondack Chairs (6)
(Amish Outlet, N. Chili)
Folding tables (4)
Folding Chairs (24)
Floor fans (3)
Lumber for raised garden beds
Flowers & shrubs (perennials, annuals)

Since the Lock 32 Building is a shell, we will be building and creating the space inside from scratch!  If you have miscellaneous items from household projects, such as spare junction/electrical boxes, wood paneling, 2x4s or other wood scraps, lamps or light fixtures, please contact us or bring your items to the work party on April 11th.  Any unused items will be donated to Habitat For Humanity.

Lock 32 Instructor Paul Twist's Photo Makes Cover of 'Kayak Session'
Or so I thought...[story from Nicole's perspective]
Two familiar boaters grace the cover of the Spring 2009 issue of the International WHITEWATER Magazine, Kayak Session

Paddlers Chris LaFlair (blue helmet) and Danny Doran (silver helmet) were photographed by Lock 32 Instructor and Team Riot kayaker Paul Twist on the Tygart River in West Virginia last September.  The combined efforts of the paddlers and the creativity of Twist in staging the photograph made for a dramatic picture, as the two boaters synchronized their boofs off the 12-foot waterfall known as Ladies' Fingers.
[What's a 'boof' you ask? Check out the Instructor Forum on the GWC Kayaking site for info]

It was a beautiful day, and the last paddle before heading home after a long weekend paddling several rivers in  the Maryland/Pennsylvania/West Virginia area.  A dozen paddlers, many GWC members and all members of the local paddling club, FLOW, had headed down south for the festivities and paddling at the Gauley Festival, paddling Class IV/V rivers including the Upper Youghiogheny, Upper Gauley, and Tygart Rivers.

The weekend kicked off with a paddle on the Upper Yough, a nine-mile stretch of creeking, boulder-hopping continuous IV-V rapids that left you pretty tired by the end!

The next day we hit the Upper Gauley in our playboats, a big-water river with technical Class V rapids (undercut rocks in just about every one, and copperhead snakes lurking if you portage) with unnamed Class IIIs throughout.  Although the river is supposedly jam-packed with boaters Gauley Fest weekend, by the time our group of 12 put on the river (a 2-hour shuttle included) after 1pm, it was clear of traffic and we paddled without meeting up with too many others along the way.  Several of our group contributed to the addition  of new campfire stories and tales of gnar (myself included with an encounter with a nasty, retentive hole--it fits two paddlers and two boats by the way--two swims, a broken paddle, bruised ego and several lessons learned in river reading skills).

Overall, it was  fantastic weekend with paddling buddies that is one of the more memorable, and as always, I take away lessons learned from the river to put into practice for the next paddling season!

Regarding the picture of Chris & Danny...even though it's a great shot, the wonders of Photoshop did me in, as I found out when I received my spring issue of Kayak Session and it was a totally different picture on the front cover...the rest of the info really is true.

Rowing News
Coach's Corner
From Coach Christina:

Spring is in the air and we are almost on the water. In these last few weeks in the tanks it is important to take some time and reflect on the individual progress you have made this winter season. I have seen rowers “reborn” in their strength and technique.  The tanks allow for the technical improvement and rowing rationale that is so hard to explain or experience on the water.  Before entering into this summer I would suggest just thinking about your experience last season and what goals you have for this year.
Do you want to race in an 8?
Would you like to learn to scull?
For any of your goals please let Paul or myself know how we can help.

A Rower's Perspective
Submitted by Lisa Craigie

This time of year I start to do and feel strange things.  I watch the weather intently and turn directly to the weather page to watch what front is moving in.  On my way to work I slow down when passing by the Erie Canal to see if the ice is breaking up and whether there is any movement in the water level.  When grabbing my workout clothes, I eye my rowing clothes with a mixed feeling of excitement and dread-“How tight will those shorts be?”  A winter is hard on anyone living in Rochester but for a rower the upcoming spring can seem like an agonizingly long wait.

I was recently in Miami on a weekend getaway and every morning and late afternoon the local crews rowed past my hotel.  My husband raised his eyebrow at me and said, “So when are we going to check out the boathouse?”  On past vacations I have called up the local boathouse to ask if I could row as a guest.  I have rowed in Vancouver, California and Florida.  I have learned through these “guest rows” that there really is no place like home.  It starts off well but then I miss my boathouse, our river and the people I have come to know over my 13 years of rowing at the GWC.  We are very blessed to have the access to the type of water that we do.  A beautiful long and winding Genesee for Head Race practices; a straight-marked Erie Canal for sprint season pieces.  We have the occasional floating log island or even a Port-a-Potty to deal with, but we row in peace and tranquility.

I’m not one to do things over and over, I’m not a morning person, and truly deep down I’m couch potatoes.  But rowing changes me; I will get up at 5 am to get to practice, I workout to be a better and stronger rower not only for myself but so I won’t let my teammates down and I can’t envision a time that I won’t be rowing in some sort of boat.  I have met many great people over the years and the funny thing is that I only know them by their rowing style.  I can’t tell you what they do for a living but I know if they are a port or starboard or what seat I want them in for a race.

What keeps me going through these long last days of winter is my anticipation of being on the water with my team.  See you on the water!
